Benefits of Membership
We’re a not-for-profit organisation, working hard to deliver the maximum benefits and value to our members. For an annual membership subscription of $20 per family, you’ll receive:
Information Sessions - we understand you might have lots of questions (we all did when we started). To offer help and support if you’re considering, or new to, home education we run regular evening sessions. Come along, meet knowledgeable, experienced home educators and ask your questions in a friendly and supportive environment. As a member, we offer you a discounted booking rate.
Online networking - we’ll email you daily updates of events and activities around the Auckland region.
Local support groups - you might be wondering how you can meet up with other home educators in your local area or what social opportunities there are. We’ll supply you with a comprehensive listing of Auckland-wide, independent, local homeschooling groups. These groups organise their own activities and events. It’s a great opportunity for you to socialise and network with other home educating families.
Special events - we’ll send you invitations to attend AHE annual events (eg AHE ‘Unity in the Community Picnic’, AHE Science and Technology Fair and AHE History Fair).
Quarterly newsletter - we’ll email you the AHE Bulletin with news, ideas, views, articles, reviews, contacts and more. It’s a great way to keep informed.
Exemptions assistance – we have a team of experienced, helpful home educators who can assist you with your Exemption Application from the Ministry of Education.
Library – you’ll be able to borrow from our library in Panmure, which features a growing collection of educational books, resources and curricula samples. If that’s too far for you to travel, a full listing of what’s available is on our website and our librarian is happy to post books to you (all you have to pay for is the shipping).
Membership card
Government liaison - we are the first point of communication for education-related government departments in Auckland. We’ve been invited into the offices to meet review officers and talk to them about what they might encounter when they come out to review home educators. And we are able to organise forum and chat sessions with various government departments. You can attend these at special member rates.
Student Identification Card - as a privilege of membership and for a small additional fee, your child can apply for a bona fide photo ID card. Use it for public transport and cinema concessions, truancy officer approaches, etc. An intangible benefit is the sense of belonging to a wider a group that a child can feel when owning or carrying a card.
