MONDAY 14 JUNE 2010

at the Ministry of Education Offices

Level 3, Eden 5 Building, 12-18 Normanby Road, Mt Eden
To legally home educate in NZ, a parent/guardian must obtain a “Certificate of Exemption from Enrolment at a Registered School” for each child. This is not available or required before the child’s 6th birthday.
This Forum aims to clarify a process which can cause some anxious moments! Be guided through the application by the staff that deal with them so that you can write yours with confidence or help others to prepare theirs. Support groups may wish to consider sending a representative or two to be up-to-date with the current Ministry approach.
Obviously, staff will be unable to go through individual draft applications but it’s certainly an opportunity to ask questions.

See his website for his prices . There are 4 students per class so they get plenty of 1:1 support. His workshop is in Papakura -not far from the motorway offramp.

I would just add that students work with power tools so need to be mature enough to focus and follow direction throughout a 2 hr class -10 is a minimum age.

Free Range Robotics is the home schooling team that AHE recently assisted to get to America by providing a bit of sponsorship funding. You can read more about this in the latest bulletin available to members in the members’ lounge.

They did so well, even appearing on TV1 Breakfast programme. They were wonderful ambassadors for home education. You can find many more news media links on their website.

Here is a letter from the captain

Thank you everyone, for your support of our team, Free Range Robotics, in our endeavours at the World Championships in Dallas. This competition had some huge excitement. A couple of highlights were our first two games; Each of these games is played by four teams: two blue teams versus two red teams. We are paired up randomly. In both of the first two games our partners were unable to play, so we played alone against two robots and we won both games. This immediately made our standing with everyone rocket up; it really showed the world what New Zealanders and homeschoolers are made of.

Of course our biggest achievement is the programming. We are the VEX World Champions in Programming. And the second trophy we brought home was the Robot Skills 3rd place. Both of these are achievements of the whole team; the programmers and drivers couldn’t have done it without a great team behind them.

At the competition they also announced the new VEX game. “Clean Sweep”. It looks to be a lot of fun with plenty of things to think about and design for. As well as a new game, we also have a new season of scrimmages being run in New Zealand. I still don’t know all the details but it is going to be good.

If anyone wants to start a robotics team I would be very happy to talk to you about setting up a team for competing in the 2009/2010 competition.

If you want to know more about Free Range Robotics or the competition, cruise over to our website which has lots pictures of the trip and the competition. www.robotics.org.nz Also there is a guest book for you to leave a comment.

To contact me you can email me at patrick at softpro.co.nz
